May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and while I try to educate about the importance of wearing a sunscreen daily, a recent survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery shows that only 1 in 5 people follow that guideline.  I'm guessing that most people either forget or they don't like the feel of a sunscreen on their skin; I get that.  So how to choose a good sunscreen that protects, as well as feels good?

Here are my recommendations for 5 of this summer's best sunscreens. Each sunscreen that I've selected:

  • Offers broad-spectrum (protect against UVA and UVB rays) and be photostable. Formulas contain avobenzone, oxybenzone, Mexoryl, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
  • High SPF (in my world, an SPF of 15 doesn't cut it any more), yet formulated for under-makeup use
  • Contains antioxidants, which help neutralize free radicals and fight signs of aging
Neutrogena-SPF 55 Liquid
Neutrogena-SPF 70 Liquid

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock Fluid SPF 55 and SPF 70 – Formulated with Helioplex, this high SPF sunscreen is very lightweight. It doesn't feel like sunscreen and has a matte finish, so it works well under makeup.  It's easy to find in drug, discount and mass merchandisers at SRP of $11.99.  Definitely a favorite!

Emergin-c_spf 30+ tinted

emerginC spf 30+ – Formulated with micronized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, Vitamins C and E, Green Tea, herbal
extracts, aloe vera and licorice root for brightening. The formula does include silicones, so it glides on skin effortlessly. I've used the tinted version and it didn't interfere with makeup. $37.00 for a 4.2 oz. tube, available at SkinStore.com.

LRP-Anth60 Shaka Fluid

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Fluid – Providing a matte finish, Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Fluid is non-greasy, photostable, fast absorbing and gives long-lasting protection. Perfect for normal/combinatin skin.  Uses "shaka shaka" technology; you shake before using to blend the ingredients together for a light finish without greasiness. This is the sunscreen I'm using daily.  Retails at $27.50; available at SkinStore.com.

Kiehls-Super-Fluid-SPF50+

Kiehl's Dermatologist Solutions Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ -Just released and an excellent all-around daily sunscreen.  This formula is ultra lightweight, oil-free and has five sun filters that work together to provide long lasting protection. Kiehl's Super Fluid UV Defense also uses "shaka shaka" technology, so no greasy feeling on the skin. Works well under makeup, with an ultra matte finish; love this one.  $32 at Kiehls.com.

Coppertone-Sport-SPF-50

Coppertone Sport with Replenishing Antioxidants -  This formula is perfect for someone who gets alot of outdoor exercise. Vitamin E is one of the antioxidants that is lost during environmental stress, so replenishing is important for preserving skin’s
barrier function and for helping to maintain skin health. Coppertone Sport with Replenishing Antioxidants feels great on the skin; it's waterproof, ultrasweatproof and ultradry.  Suggested retail price of $9.99, available in drug, discount and mass merchandisers.

One more tip; it's my advice to apply your sunscreen over moisturizer and under makeup (I like to wait about 10 minutes after applying sunscreen to add any additional products).  Have a sunsafe summer!
