It’s that point in the season where your hair can really show the effects of being in the sun or the pool. To help protect our summer hair color from degrading or fading, Marie Robinson, celebrity colorist and owner of the Marie Robinson salon in New York City, offers these tips:

  • Pools can dry out and discolor hair.  If you swim in chlorine, wet your hair down with tap water and use a light coat of conditioner.  This will fill in porous spots in your hair strands and keep it from absorbing the chlorine that will give it that green tint.
  • Use really good conditioners that are moisturizing if you’re in the sun and salt water a lot, as it is dehydrating for your hair.  This is necessary if your hair is blond, because it is already a little dry from lightening the color.
  • There are products containing SPF for the hair that will protect your color from lifting.   This is especially important if you’re a tinted redhead or tinted brunette, as the sun can lighten the color and turn it brassy.  Although SPF is helpful, it can’t protect it completely.  It’s comparable to when we wear SPF in the sun, which helps to protect against some rays but we still can tan or burn.

There are many hair care lines that make specific treatment products to help protect your summer hair color, as Marie mentioned.  You might want to check these out:

Redken Color Extend Sun line protects hair and highlights and safeguards color from the harmful effects of the sun.  The products contain UV filters, as well as ceramides to protect and condition hair, both during and after sun exposure.  Another product, Color Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF 12 is a multi-tasking leave-in that prevents sunburned scalps with SPF 12 protection.

René Furterer Sun Care features plant based formulations with natural UV filters to shield hair before and after sun exposure, so you can keep your hair healthy and still enjoy some fun in the sun.  The formulas include a Keratin Protection Factor, proven to protect 90% of the keratin in the hair. Infused with a fragrance of apricot, coconut, grapefruit and rose, this Sun Care system is an instant reminder that summertime doesn’t have to be synonymous with dry, damaged hair.

Phyto adds to their haircare lineup with the new Phyto Plage Collection.  The range include Phyto Plage Protective Sun Veil, Protective Beach Spray, Moisturizing Hair and Body Wash and Moisturizing Sun Gel.  Specialized products contains ingredients to protect, maintain moisture and/or rehydrate summer hair.

Finally, Kerastase has two new products in their Soleil Collection:  Aqua Seal, the first highly protective waterproof fluid-cream to protect very sensitized hair and Soleil Lait Richesse, a daily restoring and moisturizing conditioner for all sun-exposed hair.
