Makeup Wars is back with a tough challenge…buy a full face of makeup for $20 or less! A group of beauty bloggers and I are up for the task, scouring drug stores, discount stores…even the Dollar Store! How did I do? Read on to find out…
I have to admit, this challenge was outside my comfort zone. I wear drugstore-brands of makeup without any problem, but a whole face of makeup for $20? I knew I would have to decide what my “splurge” was going to be and go from there. I ultimately decided on L’Oreal’s new Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream. It’s a “4-in-1″ product that primes, corrects, hydrates and perfects skin. I instantly saw the value in that! Total purchase price = $10.99.
That meant I was going to have to be creative with my eye products. I headed to the Dollar Store, where I was amazed at how big the beauty section was. I picked out 3 LA Colors products: an eyeshadow palette in neutral shades, an eyeliner pencil in black, a mascara and an e.l.f. lip gloss–total = $4. That left approximately $5.00 for a cheek color. Since it’s summer, I decided on a bronzer. I’ve previously purchased NYC bronzers, so that was an easy decision. Cost = $4.47.
In terms of product performance, overall, I liked almost everything. The one product that I felt was not up to the task was the mascara. It seemed to come out of the tube in one big glop. The colors in the eyeshadow palette were really pretty and while not the most pigmented, using a MAC 239 brush and a primer helped me get a pretty, neutral look that lasted. The NYC Bronzer was also a good buy. The one product I really needed but couldn’t “afford” was a concealer.
The total cost of the makeup purchased for this challenge came to $19.46 (we didn’t count taxes), so I barely made it under $20. What do you think of my makeup buys?

I haven’t seen that BB cream yet, I think they’re coming out with a few! You had a few good product choices here that I hadn’t even thought of.
YOu did a great shopping job! I wish that the Loreal BB product worked for me. It was practically invisible as far as coverage goes. Your Dollar Store has some awesome products. Mine only so-so. Love your post!
I saw the LA Colors at the dollar store and actually bought a set but chose to use Rimmel. Tools were a challenge for me and I had a feeling that the LA Colors wouldn’t work well with the ELF brush I’d already bought. Great job!
This sounds like a super fun challenge! Unfortunately, I would fail miserably since I live in Japan, and everything is so expensive!
Anyway, just wondering the BB cream u bought, is it buildable? If so, maybe it can be used as a concealer as well? Thats what I sometimes do with my Bb cream….
Nice choices! We chose the EXACT same NYC Bronzer, down to the shade. How funny is that?
great haul!!! that is a popular bronzer for this challenge! i’ll need to check it out!
I have never tried LA Colors. Maybe I should! The eye shades look quite nice.
I am wanting this NYC bronzer now! I am curious about the L’oreal BB Cream too! Great choices! It sure is hard to do a face for $20. But, you did great!!!
Wow, your dollar store is way better than mine! Great selection of products. I need to find that NYC bronzer!
