Although I’m an adamant supporter of sun safety all year, now is the time to bring the message home. With ‘Don’t Fry Day‘ on May 22nd, it’s a good reminder on the importance of wearing sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. Before you pack that beach bag, make sure you have a new sunscreen to include. These are my favorites of the recent sunscreens I’ve been testing…
My Top 12 Favorite Sunscreens of 2015 include: (in no particular order)
- Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Broad Spectrum SPF 50
- La Prairie Ultra Protection Stick Eye, Lip, Nose SPF 40
- Murad Invisible Perfecting Shield SPF 30
- Radical Skincare Skin Perfecting Screen SPF 30
- Skinceuticals Physical Matte UV Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50
- L’Oreal Paris Advanced Suncare Invisible Protect Clear Cool Lotion SPF 30
- Neutrogena CoolDry Sport Sunscreen SPF 30 Lotion

I continue to say that the best sunscreen is the sunscreen you wear; compliance is only at about 30% for women and even less for men. It’s so important that you incorporate sun (or UVA/UVB ray) protection into your daily regimen. If you’re wondering about excellent sunscreens to wear under makeup, I’ve got that covered, too, although any of the sunscreens listed in the “For Face” section, would qualify.
So how to decide which sunscreen formula is right for you?
For the face, I prefer a minimum of SPF 30 and a light texture that is not greasy and absorbs into the skin. Skinceuticals Physical Matte UV Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is lightly tinted and has a matte finish, which I really like. For the ultimate in portability, I’d recommend La Prairie Ultra Protection Stick Eye, Lip, Nose SPF 40. It’s the most elegant “face stick” I’ve tried; it’s small and chic, so you can tuck it into your purse and take it with you.
Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is oil-free and a great choice if you live in the city and are exposed to pollution and other environmental stressors. The Radical Skincare Skin Perfecting Screen SPF 30 is a non-chemical (physical) sunscreen with a light tint, matte finish and light diffusing pigments, making it a nice anti-aging choice. Murad Invisible Perfecting Shield SPF 30 is a good choice for acne-prone skins or those looking for a clear product to apply to skin, plus it acts as a primer and skin perfector. L’Oreal Paris Advanced Suncare Invisible Protect Clear Cool Lotion SPF 30 is another clear product, with a non-sticky feel. It doesn’t leave a residue, has an instant cooling effect and is infused with powerful antioxidants like vitamin E and white grape seed.
For body, I’ve included a variety of textures and styles of application, from lotions to oils to sprays. In the lotion category, I really liked NO-AD Prevent and Repair Body Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 15, which comes in a pump. It has a great formula of antioxidants to help fight free radicals, boost collagen, moisturize and is inexpensive. Neutrogena CoolDry Sport Sunscreen SPF 30 Lotion has new technology that provides breathable sun protection, plus is sweat and water resistant, making it a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts. Skin Medica Environmental Defense Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ has antioxidants in the formula to fight free radicals, is oil-free and fragrance-free. You can use this one on your face and body.
The Supergoop Sun Defying Sunscreen Oil Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is the first sunscreen oil I’ve ever tried and I love it. It sprays on with a lightweight feel, is non-greasy and dries quickly. Great for dry skins! Alba Botanica® Very Emollient™ Fragrance Free Clear Spray Sunscreen is a good choice for someone looking that has sensitive skin, since it’s fragrance-free and paraben-free. Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Ultra Light Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is another spray option with UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum sun protection, is non greasy, sweat and water resistant and has a light tropical scent. If you’re biking, hiking or doing outdoor activities, it’s a nice choice.
