These days, there is more interest than ever in finding a beauty bargain. Taking a page from “fast fashion” retailers, it’s often not that long before you see a less expensive version of a beauty classic. This week’s Makeup Wars Challenge is Beauty Splurge Vs. Steal, where we highlight some of our favorites.
It’s no secret that I love my prestige beauty and skincare products. But every now and then I find a less expensive version that makes me do a double-take.
Last year, I tried the Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil (review) and really liked it. Imagine my surprise when I saw the new Milani Moisture Lock Oil Infused Lip Treatment! The Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil is a blend of several oils, is a nourishing and hydrating lip treatment with a slight raspberry flavor. It retails for $24. The Milani Moisture Lock Oil Infused Lip Treatments are also a blend of oils. These lip treatments are somewhat lighter, not flavored or scented, are nourishing and hydrating, plus feel good on the lips. They retail at $7.99. So would I give it to the Splurge (Clarins) or the Steal (Milani)? My verdict: Milani.
One of my weaknesses is a beautiful blush. I recently was sent one of the new COVERGIRL Tru Blend Blushes in the Medium Rose shade. When I saw it, I was sure I had a MAC Mineralize Blush that was nearly identical. After going through my blush drawer, I found it…Superduper Natural Mineralize Blush (this shade is no longer available, but Dainty is close). The COVERGIRL Tru Blend Blush ($9.99) has a beautiful blend of rose shades and is also a baked formula with a highlighting effect on the skin. The MAC Mineralize Blushes are a formula of baked minerals and pigments, with an illuminating finish. In my opinion, the wear and pigmentation of the MAC Mineralize Blush ($27) slightly edges out that of the COVERGIRL Tru Blend Blush. In my opinion, I would choose the Splurge over the Steal.
More Splurge Vs. Steal goodness!
