Since Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer, you want to make sure you’re protected before hitting the beach. I’ve been busy testing sunscreens and have come up with seven that make the grade and also meet the new FDA guidelines for sunscreen. Read on for more…
Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a good time to not only take a look at new sunscreens, but also break down the new FDA Guidelines for sunscreens that go into effect later this year. These new guidelines by the Food and Drug Administration aim to protect consumers from skin cancer through greater testing and clearer labeling on sun-protection products, including cosmetics with sunscreen.
Sunscreen products that pass a new FDA standard will now be labeled to say “broad spectrum,” followed by the product’s SPF, to indicate its effectiveness for both UVA (the “aging” rays) and UVB (the “damaging”) rays. If a product has an SPF lower than 15, it will need to carry a warning label stating, “This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging.” The new law was supposed to go into effect in June, but has now been pushed back to December so that manufacturers can bring labeling into compliance.
These are the 7 broad-spectrum sunscreens (meaning they offer UVA/UVB protection) that I’m loving right now:
L’Oréal Paris Sublime Sun Collection – L’Oreal’s first sun care line, available in mists and lotions for complete range of protection against the sun’s damaging rays; SPF 30 and SPF 50 for face and body. My favorite product is the Sublime Sun SPF 50+ Liquid Silk Sunshield. It goes on very light and sheer and definitely doesn’t feel like you have sun protection on.
SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 – This all-physical sunscreen absorbs quickly into skin and can be worn on top of makeup without being heavy or shiny, due to it’s mattifying properties. Transparent Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide for excellent sun protection while adapting to the natural skin tones of all ethnicities. Available now in a limited-edition 125 ml (4.2 oz.) size. If you’re serious about your skincare, this one’s for you.
Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF® SPF 30 Dry Sunscreen – This chemical-free, powder sunscreen offers broad-spectrum SPF 30 sun protection. If you’re one of those people that forget to wear sunscreen; add it on top of makeup in place of your finishing powder. I love it because it’s super easy and convenient! If you’re a frequent traveler, this is a great choice.
Banana Boat Sunscreen Natural Reflect Lotion and Sport Performance CoolZone Spray offers excellent sun protection for your whole family at a great value. Both lines offer UVA and UVB protection; the Natural Reflect Lotion uses naturally-sourced Zinc Oxide (a physical sunblock and one of the best), while the Sport Performance CoolZone Sprays offer the convenience of invisible, rub-free protection.
Clarins UV Plus HP Day Screen SPF 40 Tint – One reason that women don’t wear sunscreen is that it can turn white–definitely not a good look. Clarins new UV Plus HP Day Screen SPF 40 Tint is perfect for everyday wear (on top of moisturizer). It doesn’t feel greasy on the skin and the tint gives your skin a very natural look. I really like this one for everyday use (not recommended for a day at the beach), especially for those days you’re not wearing makeup. In addition to 100% Mineral Screen, this one comes in two shade choices, has anti-oxidants and an anti-pollution complex; particularly good for city-dwellers.
Vichy Capital Soleil SPF 60 Soft Sheer Sunscreen Lotion – This formula is super nourishing, containing potent antioxidants like White Grape Polyphenols and Vitamin E to fight free radicals. It’s non-greasy, fragrance-free, water resistant and is a great choice if you have sensitive skin. This is an elegant cream that doesn’t feel like a sunscreen at all–more like you’re applying a moisturizer– highly recommended.
Aveeno Hydrosport Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 – I love that more companies are offering sunscreen in spray form, because it’s so easy, non-messy and convenient. This new sunscreen offers UVA/UVB protection and is powered by Aveeno’s Natural Lotus Complex and advanced ENVIROGUARD™ technology to provide superior protection. It’s sweat and water-resistant, oil-free and is non-greasy. If you’re into outdoor sports, throw this one in your beach bag!
