You don’t have to convince me that using a primer will give your makeup a boost, in terms of wear and finish. Ask any makeup artist; it’s an essential part of skin preparation.  Eye Prime from MAKE UP FOR EVER and Matte Perfecting Prime and Illuminating Perfecting Primer from Estee Lauder are new primers that you need to know about.  Read on for more…

To me, using a good eye primer is as essential as applying my mascara. Oftentimes when I hear someone talking that they had problems with a product creasing or not lasting, it’s because they didn’t use a primer.  Eye Prime from MAKE UP FOR EVER preps the eye surface with a formula that includes waxes and fixing polymers.  This enables the shadow to be long-lasting, smudge and crease-proof.

The cream-color of Eye Prime provides a neutral base and doesn’t interfere with eyeshadow color. It’s also excellent if you need to even out the skin tone of your eyelids. Just apply a thin layer to lids; I find that it’s a good idea to wait 5-10 seconds to let it “set” before applying your eye shadow.  MAKE UP FOR EVER Eye Prime retails at $22 and is available at and MAKE UP FOR EVER boutiques.

Estée Lauder has recently introduced two face primers that are perfect for summer: Matte Perfecting Primer and Illuminating Perfecting Primer.  Summer presents a unique challenge for makeup, because heat and humidity can contribute to makeup “melting” off the face.  Yet many women don’t like using a primer, because some are silicone-heavy, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

Matte Perfecting Primer ($32) is for you if your complexion is normal, oily or combination. Applied on top of your moisturizer, this gel-creme primer contains mattifying agents that keep skin from shining, plus antioxidants like Vitamin E and Green Tea to help rebalance skin.  Light-diffusing optics help minimize imperfections. With my combination skin, I can use either formula and have found this one to be effective at controlling shine.

Illuminating Perfecting Primer is for those with normal, combination or dry skin.  This primer works great if you like the look of a subtle bit of radiance–that glow from within look.  As far as a face primer, this one is my current favorite.  Soft-reflection optics minimize imperfections and ingredients such as Vitamin E, Rice Bran Extract and Shea Butter nourish and perfect. What I like about this primer is that it adds radiance and luminosity with being overtly “sparkly”. You could certainly add a luminizing product on top if you’d like more.

Estée Lauder Matte Perfecting Primer and Illuminating Perfecting Primer are available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and online at
