Even the mildest winter can wreak havoc with your skin. The air is so much drier, it can make skin sensitive and dehydrated. The wind can cause chapping and irritation. It all adds up to needing a little extra TLC. I’ve been busy testing products that are excellent for winter skins. See what I’ve found…

First, if you aren’t already using a humidifier in your house, start here! Even just adding a small room-size humidifier can make a huge difference in your skin’s comfort level. The Honeywell Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier (HCM-350) comes equipped with QuietCare technology, which delivers fresh, cool moisture. I’ve been running this in our bedroom and you wouldn’t believe how much more comfortable the air is. The Honeywell Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier is also designed to kill up to 99.9% of bacteria, mold, fungus and viruses that can exist in the tap water you use to fill the unit and it’s up to 25% quieter than other humidifiers. At Target, $69.99.

From Lumene, I really like the Sensitive Touch 5 Min SOS Cream.  This cream was developed in co-operation with the Finnish Allergy and Asthma Federation specifically to soothe extremely dry, stressed and overly sensitive skin. It works to heal rough patches and provides immediate relief whenever skin needs it, helping to restore the skin’s well-being in just five minutes. Sensitive Touch 5 Min SOS Cream has a new innovative skin calming technology to reduce irritation and strengthen skin against external irritations over time. help your skin adjust to the changing air conditions and temperatures. At Drugstore.com, $19.99.

Tammy Fender’s Spontaneous Recovery Crème is perfect for pampering winter skin and great to tuck into your makeup bag for when you fly. This all-in-one cream/serum/oil fusion and nourishing salve provides a protective barrier against the elements. The texture is more like a balm; it’s quite thick, yet applies easily. Made with Organic Rose Hip, Helichrysum, Lavender and Matricaria, Spontaneous Recovery Crème offers instant hydration. At BeautyBar, $165.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream is a cult-classic and the original skin multi-tasker. This thick balm has been in the line for years–and with good reason. It’s an excellent product to use to help prevent windburn or chapping to exposed areas of skin. I love it as a lip balm — long-lasting, hydrating and very effective. Formulated with petrolatum, when you apply Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, it acts as a barrier on skin to protect it. Now available in a fragrance-free version, which is great news for sensitive, reactive skins. At Beauty.com, $19.50.

Estee Lauder Advanced Time Zone Age Reversing Night Creme is a part of the luxurious, new Advanced Time Zone Repair range. Advanced Time Zone Age Reversing Night Creme Creme has technology that helps skin boost its natural production of line-plumping hyaluronic acid by 182%.  Also available is Estee Lauder Advanced Time Zone Age Reversing Line/Wrinkle Creme SPF15 for Normal/Combination Skin or Dry Skin, Hydrating Gel for oily skins and an Eye Creme, which I love. This rich, anti-aging line can be used year ’round, not just in winter, but it really makes your skin feel wonderfully hydrated and comfortable.

And I can’t mention skincare without mentioning Kiehl’s new Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream. I’ve been wearing the Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 daily and I like it because it has a high SPF30 but doesn’t have a heavy “sunscreen” feel to it. In fact, it absorbs right into skin and doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy.  It’s important to remember that the sun’s rays are strong, even in winter, so sunscreen is a must. Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream utilizes copper, which has been shown to help form, protect, and strengthen elastin, serve as a protective antioxidant, and improve the skin’s moisture barrier. There is a Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream without sunscreen and an Eye Cream available. A new favorite!

Stila Face the Day™ Multi-Use Moisturizing Gel Cream is a brand new multi-purpose moisturizer designed to hydrate, protect and revitalize skin. The unique gel-cream formula features hyaluronic acid to strengthen skin’s moisture barrier, AlpineRose stem cells for antioxidant protection and botanical extracts to reduce inflammation and soothe skin. Plus, Face the Day™ Multi-Use Moisturizing Gel Cream is free of synthetic fragrance, mineral oil, sulfates, parabens and phthalates, so it’s good for sensitive skins. I love the feel on my combination skin–it hydrates without being greasy; it makes a nice moisturizer prior to applying makeup.Available at Ulta, $38.
