I’m just back from a mind-blowing trip to New York for the Mercedes-Benz Spring-Summer 2014 Fashion Week. Being at Fashion Week is an opportunity to watch some of the greatest makeup artist work their craft and set the trends for the upcoming season. Here are some of the best in beauty looks that I saw:
In general, the look for Spring is always almost ethereal and “no makeup” makeup. At Naeem Khan, NARS Director of Global Artistry James Boehmer used South Beach Multiple on eyes, with Corfu Cream Eyeshadow layered on top for dimension and loose powder to set. No eyeliner was used; instead James pressed Lola Lola, a chocolate shimmer eyeshadow, into the lashline instead. The lips were the focus here, with Hyde Park and Yu Satin Lip Pencils creating a soft, dimensional lip.
This minimalist approach was also seen at Zero+Maria Cornejo, where Romy Soleimani for Beauty.com applied Kevyn Aucoin The Eyeshadow Duo #209 (Snow/Coal) in an upward sweep to the eyelid, for a modern, graphic look. On the face, Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer (one of my absolute favorite products) and The Sensual Skin Tinted Balm were the only makeup–no blush or color.
Bobbi Brown artist Marc Reagan repeated the pretty, but strong look at Elie Tahari using Pale Cream eyeshadow all over eyelids with a bit of Soft Buff eyeshadow on the lower lid. These shades are from the Nectar & Nudes Eye Palette, which will be launching in Spring. Marc finished the eye with Espresso and Black Ink Gel Liner and Smokey Eye Mascara (amazing!), which opened up the eye and added considerable length and drama. The soft, pink lip was also a trend that I saw repeated at many shows. This is the Dusty Pink Art Stick (launching Spring ’14).
The Charlotte Ronson show was the only show where I saw a smoky eye look. Romy Soleimani for Beauty.com used the shimmery section of Boots No7 Stay Perfect Eye Shadow Trio in Forest Fruits (which is actually a gorgeous trio of plums) on the lid and smoked out the look with the No7 Stay Perfect Amazing Eyes Pencil in Black. She also applied liner on the waterline and in the inner corner of the eye. The look was very “Cool girl”–one of my favorites that I saw all week.
And you know when Mally Roncal, Lead Makeup Artist for Tracy Reese comes to play, she’s going to bring it! The look at Tracy Reese can always best be described as “fierce” — nothing shy or minimalist here. Mally created a dramatic winged cat-eye look with bold brows (a definite trend for spring). First Mally lined the eyes with the Mally Beauty Evercolor Starlight Waterproof Eyeliner in Midnight; she then lined the bottom lash line with the Evercolor Starlight Waterproof Eyeliner in Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate and Starshine. She finished by applying Mally Beauty Eye Precision Liquid Liner over the top of the other colors. It was really striking!
